Guide: Community Moderator Role#
The purpose of this role is to invite new members into the OGGM community Slack and the OGGM-Hubs, ensuring all safety checks are adhered to.
Pre-requisites#
Please ensure you have:
The emails from the info@oggm.org mailbox forwarded to your personal mailbox.
An admin account on OGGM-Hub (and, when appropriate, Classroom).
Admin privileges in the OGGM Slack Community.
Note: When replying to a request email, ensure that you Cc in info@oggm.org into all of your replies. This is so other Community Admins can see that the case is being dealt with, and work is not duplicated.
To grant a new member access to the OGGM Slack#
A new potential member will send an email to the OGGM mailbox, requesting to join the OGGM Slack Community. Please regularly check your spam inbox, as the emails may end up here.
Depending on how much information is included in the initial request, further details may be required. For example,
Motivations for joining the community.
What institution they are associated with.
An institution email if possible.
If you are satisfied with these responses, you may grant access. If you are unsure of the legitimacy of the request, you can contact Fabien Maussion or Patrick Schmitt for further guidance.
To grant access to Slack, go to the OGGM Slack and click the drop down arrow at the top left of the screen
Click “invite people to oggm”, there should be a pop-up box.
Add the email of the new community member, and invite them as a Member of a community, with an optional message! You can also choose various channels to add them to.
Notify the new member that they have now been added to the Slack! And ask them to introduce themselves in the channel #introductions.
To grant a new member access to the OGGM JupterHub#
A new potential member will send an email to the OGGM mailbox, requesting to join the JupyterHub. Please regularly check your spam inbox, as the emails may end up here.
Depending on how much information is included in the request, more information may be required. For example,
Motivations for joining the community.
What institution they are associated with.
An institution email address is necessary here.
Note: A new member must only be added to the OGGM JupyterHub with an institutional email address, this is for security purposes.
If you are satisfied with these responses, you may grant access. If you are unsure of the legitimacy of the request, you can contact Fabien Maussion or Patrick Schmitt for further guidance.
Once you are content with the legitimacy of the request, direct the user to the page https://hub.oggm.org/hub to create an account with their username as their institutional email, and to choose a password.
Once the new user has submitted this, they will need to notify the admin to authorize their account.
Once the new account has been made, the admin will need to navigate to the OGGM JupterHub Homepage, and on the banner at the top, click “Authorize Users”.
Then scroll to the bottom of the page, the new user should be at the end of the list of the users. Then select the “Authorize” button, to authorize the new user.
Note: Do not authorize any older, unauthorized users on the list. Only the case which you are dealing with.
Notify the user that they have been added to the OGGM JupyterHub Community! There is no automated email here, so this is a crucial step.
